He legalised Self-respect marriages for the first time in the country. The law was passed by the Tamil Nadu assembly on November 27, 1967, and was approved by the President on January 17, 1968. This was officially announced in the Tamil Nadu Government Gazette on January 23, 1968. Self-respect marriages are those that do not require any religious rites or rituals, and are based on mutual consent and respect between the bride and groom.
